Today we received almost two feet of snow! Living in the D.C. area that is a lot of snow!!

We wanted to play in the snow with our son (1 1/2 years old) so we started the bundling up process. He didn't quite understand why Mommy kept putting layer after layer of clothes on him. After about 20 minutes or so we were finally done putting all of the clothes on and we ventured outside. He wasn't too happy standing in the deep snow...his face said, "Why are you doing this to me Mommy?".

We kept trying. We then tried to see if he liked being pulled in the sled. We thought he would love this since he loved being pulled in his red wagon in the summer and the sled was even red. This didn't go over well either. You would have thought we were trying to torture our son rather than let him enjoy one of the greatest things, playing in the snow. He liked riding in the sled a lot better when Mommy rode with him...a little harder for Daddy to pull both of us up the hill though.
We then ventured over to familiar grounds, the playground, although it was a bit different with over a foot of snow. We decided to attempt sled riding again. Daddy went first, then Mommy, and then our son seemed interested in going as well. So Daddy and he went down the hill. It seemed a success but he didn't seem to want to go again...still not sure what to make of it. So Mommy and Daddy went a few more times and then we started to venture back home.
On the way back, we ran into some of his friends and so he became upset when he realized we were going home and not with them to play. By now, we had been out for quite some time and Mommy didn't want his cheeks to get too cold. The rest of his body was definitely warm due to all the extra layers. So unfortunately we continued home. Mommy went on one last sled ride with him as Daddy pulled both of them to the house. In the end everyone was enjoying the snow.

After going inside, Mommy and him made some sugar cookies while Daddy tried to shovel some snow so we could eventually get our car out of our parking spot. Mommy did a cookie experiment making them with whole wheat flour and adding flaxseed meal. For the topping she made a simple icing out of confectioners sugar (just sugar, some milk, and vanilla) and then made another batch of icing that she added pureed raspberries to make a red icing. Mommy was trying to make a festive holiday treat while still using some of the tips from The Healthiest Kid in the Neighborhood by the Sears family.
The end result, the cookies were very tasty (and healthier than a standard sugar cookie.) Here are a few pictures, (Mommy won't win the best cookie decorating contest) but she put a lot of love into her cookies. Daddy was very nice and cleaned up the mess in the kitchen.

What a wonderful day ...playing in the snow and then baking cookies. A great way to get in the holiday spirit!
