Making Friends - July 2 - 5, 2011
We had a great mini-vacation at the beach to celebrate the 4th of July. We weren't there very long since we didn't arrive until nighttime on the 2nd and we left early afternoon on the 5th but besides the effort that goes into taking an 8 month old and a 3 year old away for the weekend; it was well worth it. Our 3 year old was very patient as he woke up on the 2nd (about 7:30AM) ready to go to the beach and we finally made it to the beach by 7:30PM. On the 3rd we celebrated Granddad's birthday and were treated with a firework's display and then on the 4th we saw another wonderful firework display. (3 nights of fireworks! We really celebrated the 4th this year.) But one of my favorite memories was on the last day at the beach when our 3 year old ran off and made friends with kids a little older and played with them all day rarely looking back to even see if we were there. He had a blast playing in an ocean puddle, digging, making forts, and just having fun with friends.

Bike Parade - July 1, 2011
We started our 4th of July Celebration doing our first bike parade with our 3 year old and our 8 month old. It went better than I expected...you never know what a 3 year old will and won't like. He loved riding his real big boy bike in the parade and he rang his bell the entire parade. Our 8 month old had fun chewing on the flags in her decorated wagon.

After the parade we had fun hanging out at the community festivities and our son enjoyed watching the fireworks. He laughed (a slightly nervous laugh due to the loudness of the fireworks) but he loved the show.

Laundry - June 20, 2011
My 3 year old has always enjoyed helping around the house and recently, he has been able to truly help. Although, it still probably takes longer to do the task with the "help" I definitely think it is good to involve him in the process. Recently, he thinks it is fun to put the clothes in the dryer as we have our dryer stacked on top of the washer and so he throws each item and tries to get it into the dryer. I help by making sure the clothes actually make it into the dryer. What was really funny was his outfit he was wearing while throwing our laundry into the dryer. He had on his yellow rain boots, just underwear (working on potty training), and a regular t-shirt.

Bike Shopping - June 12, 2011
This past weekend we went bike shopping. Both Mommy and Daddy could use a new bike since we are doing a Mini-Tri this August and we would be able to run faster than use our current bikes. I felt bad dragging our son around the local bike shops when it was a perfect day to go to the pool but I think he had a blast. We quickly learned that our 3 year old LOVED riding all of the big kid bikes in the store. So we aren't just buying 2 new bikes, I guess we are buying 3, one for my 3 year old as well. Fortunately, he is able to ride the 4-7 year old bike (16 inch) so we don't have to buy the 3 year old bike (12 inch) and he'll be able to use it for a few years at least. I'm looking forward to future bike trips!

Local Carnival - June 6, 2011
We went to our local carnival this past weekend. Our son was very excited to go and see the fireworks and then when we got there he kept walking to each little kid ride but didn't want to ride anything. I was totally confused as last year when he was only 2 years old he loved Disney and going to a local amusement park where he rode all of the rides by himself. But now that he was 3, he decided he didn't want to ride any rides. It seems that this isn't that uncommon for 3 year olds.
Instead he just wanted to eat. So after eating pizza, a giant ice cream cone, and a lollipop (Mommy let him eat non-organic junk food) it was time to get ready to go home for a nap before the fireworks. Of course, this was when our 3 year old decided he would go in one of the bounce houses. Well, once he went in he LOVED it and he did it over and over and over and over again. Mommy finally convinced him to try something else so he decided to go on one of the little kid rides and loved it as well. He was able to do a few more rides and then he got very upset when it was time to go home but we knew if we wanted to see fireworks he had to get at least some sort of a nap. After everyone rested up we went back to do a few more rides and watch the fireworks. It was a great fireworks display; our son didn't like the loud booms but when it was over he wanted to see more and then the next day he asked to go see fireworks again. Overall, it was a great day! Cottage Memories - May 30, 2011
We just got home from a very relaxing weekend at the cottage I grew up in practically every weekend of my childhood. There is no TV, no phone (we do have cell phones now but with very little reception), water from water tanks (we don't drink the water), just wonderful country air, a lake we can walk to (about 1 1/2 miles away), and a fire pit to sit, talk, and relax. Our 3 year old had fun doing creek walks with Nana, finding salamanders and snails; digging in the sand; and helping around the cottage. Although we couldn't wait to get a "real" shower when we got home we definitely came home much more relaxed.

Happy 3rd Birthday - May 15, 2011
We celebrated my son's third birthday today. It was definitely a memorable experience. We had it at our local gym and they did a great job having organized games with the kids. My son loved the first 10 minutes until we got in a circle and they went around trying to find the "birthday boy" and once he realized all attention was on him he decided he didn't want to participate anymore and left the room; well really ran screaming out of the room. One of the most social kids I know decided he didn't want to be social at all. He preferred to be in the other room eating the popcorn and pretzels while his friends played the organized games. (It probably didn't help that no one gave him a good breakfast before the party and he was definitely hungry but I think realizing all of the focus was on him probably was the main reason he preferred to be in the other room.)
After we all ate the pizza for lunch I requested we no longer do organized games and just do free play and my normal happy social boy was happy to participate in the free play. Overall, I think he did have a great birthday and it was definitely one we will all remember.

Easter Morning - April 24, 2011
Our 3 year old was very excited to see what the Easter Bunny left him. He ran downstairs to see the "mess" the Easter Bunny left..there was Easter Grass all over the floor. Before he really checked to see what presents/candy the Easter Bunny left he helped Daddy clean up all of the Easter grass. Probably the favorite gift was a TONKA truck.

Egg Hunt & Easter Eggs - April 23, 2011
We started our morning with an Easter Egg hunt in our local community. It was a wonderful event except it would be even better if parents were not allowed to go in with the kids. My son had a great time picking up each egg, shaking the egg to see if it had the sound he was looking for and if it did he'd put the egg in his basket and if not he'd set it back down for another little kid to find.
Nana was excited to dye Easter Eggs with her 3 year old grandson even if it meant a little mess in her spotless white kitchen. So she put down garbage bags on the counter top to make sure we didn't do any permanent damage. Our 3 year old is a typical boy with lots of energy although he is very focused when it comes to creative projects and he took complete control of the egg dying process. He would pick up the egg with the special tongs put it gently in the cup of dye and then use a spoon to get it out of the dye. I think he only spilled maybe one drop of dye. It was fun watching him meticulously dye 23 Easter Eggs. He was disappointed there was 1 egg missing.
